Our History
A mission of mercy for the workers of the Strip
The story of Guardian Angel Cathedral begins in 1958, when the Clerics of St. Viator began celebrating early morning Sunday Masses in hotels and casinos along the Las Vegas Strip.
These 4:30 AM Masses served Catholic cooks, bartenders, waiters, musicians, visitors, and hospitality workers who needed to fulfill their Sunday obligation before returning home after the last shift.
That mission became the Guardian Angel Shrine, then Co-Cathedral, then Cathedral of the Diocese of Las Vegas, and now the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Las Vegas.
First early morning Masses celebrated for Strip workers and visitors.
Guardian Angel Shrine established as a permanent spiritual home.
Elevated to parish and Co-Cathedral status in the Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas.
Guardian Angel named Cathedral of the Diocese of Las Vegas.
Honored as Metropolitan Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Las Vegas.
